3D product configurators for online shops

3D Product Viewers and Configurators for Online Stores 06:22
In e-commerce, product returns and conversion rates are crucial. 3D models better communicate the product to the customer, making the shopping experience more exciting and the online shop more efficient. For a 3D online shop, 3D models of all products are needed. These can either be 3D modeled from scratch or created more cost-effectively and truer-to-life with 3D scanning.

Improved Conversion Rate

Online shops with 3D product viewers should improve their conversion rate by 15% to 30%. In
combination with a 3D product configurator, the customer can even put together a custom-made
product—fantastic possibilities for upselling.

Some online shops already use 360° viewers. However, we would describe these as “pseudo-3D,” as
they bunch together a string of photos that make the product appear three-dimensional. But 3D
implies three dimensions, and a 360°-viewer lets the customer rotate the product only on the Xaxis—not really 3D.

Why Are True 3D Product Viewers So Rare?

The main reason why 3D product viewers are still rare is long loading times. Even a simple 3D model
has a file size of 10 MB to 15MB, which sometimes takes 5 seconds to load. This qualifies as infinity
in e-commerce.
Furthermore, it is technically complicated and costly to implement a 3D online shop. In contrast to
classic product images, it is technically demanding to host 3D models on your website. Therefore,
the online shops we are aware of, use cloud services to host their 3D models. However, if these
external cloud services fail, there are, suddenly, no viewable products online.

How Can I Get the 3D Models of My Products onto my Online Shop?

Imagine you own an online shop and want to display your products in 3D. How do you do that?

If you sell machines (electric drills, vacuum cleaners, etc.), there is a good chance that the
manufacturer already has CAD data for these products. However, companies are reluctant to give
out these 3D files because their products can be copied. If you do receive the CAD data, though, you
must convert it into a colored polygon model (200k polygons). You will need to balance small file size
with good quality for the 3D model. Our company, Holocreators, can help you with this task.

If you need 3D models of products like shoes or handbags, the manufacturer usually does not have
any 3D data. So, you have two options. Either you build a new model using 3D software (3D
modeling), or create a 3D scan.

Which 3D Viewers Are Available for My Website?

A Selection of Websites That Use 3D Product Configurators

Sketchfab and Threekit also offer 3D product configurators. The customer can interactively change
the shape and color of the products.

Conclusion

3D models in e-commerce are the future—no doubt about it. However, the technical hurdles are still
prohibitive. Slow Internet and old computers make loading times and interaction unsatisfactory for
online customers. Nevertheless, it can be assumed that this issue will be overcome very soon.
Gigabit Internet, 5G and faster processors are on the rise. Once 3D models become standard for
online shops, we will be able to use them for Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR),
making classical product photography obsolete.

Swann has been enthusiastic about everything 3D for many years. His roots lie in analog holography, which brought him to digital 3D-modeling in 2011.

The rapid progress of various 3D-scanning techniques fascinated himso much thathe founded Holocreators together with his brother Miro Rack in 2015.

Kitbashing is associated with model making. It is composed of the words "Kit" and "Bashing". “Kit” refers to "model kit". So, when a model maker is "kitbashing", he blends parts from different model kits. Similar to a collage. The model maker combines several individual models into an entirely new model.

A NURBS model consists of points connected by curves. A polygon mesh consists of thousands or millions of small triangles. CAD surface models are usually created using NURBS surfaces, while 3D scans are typically exported as a polygon mesh. The conversion from a polygon mesh to a NURBS model is called "reverse engineering".

Reverse engineering enables us to create a copy of an object. For this purpose, the part is 3Dscanned, then the 3D scan data is converted into a CAD format, and finally, the part is manufactured. All these steps result in noticeable deviations. If an error adds up over multiple steps, then we call this error propagation.
